Father’s Day 2010 – Why We Celebrate It

Father’s Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June. And while most people think of it is a special day for dads, many people don’t realize how much work it took to make this a National Holiday.

Many attempts were made before this holiday was signed into law in 1972, while Mother’s Day was immediately embraced. Some viewed it as another commercial holiday and did not want to make it a national holiday. But, it all started with a young woman, Sonora Smart Dodd, who was raised by only her dad and felt that we should celebrate our fathers. President after President rallied to make this an official day, but it was still scoffed and laughed at.  After many attempts, Father’s Day was signed into law and  is celebrated every year. This year, on June 20, 2010.

Now, even though some may view it as another commercial holiday and it might’ve taken a while for the law to pass, how do you commemorate it?  When it comes down to it, shouldn’t we give dad at least one day or actually, every day of the year, for that matter? I’m sure he’d appreciate it. I’m sure my dad would’ve appreciated it.
